Interview with CTV On "Indie and the Emotion Creatures"

Recently, director of Holistic Healing Counselling, Shaheen Alarakhia was interviewed by CTV Morning Live about her new children's book Indie and the Emotion Creatures. Shaheen explained how she uses therapeutic techniques to teach children and their parents & caregivers a unique way to de-shame emotions and help increase regulation.

INTERVIEW WITH CTV NEWS

In this interview with CTV Morning Live, Canadian Certified Counsellor, Shaheen Alarakhia, explains how she was a mom while getting her Master's and learning how to be a therapist. During this time, she realized the strategies she was learning to help adults were also useful at home with her kids. Shaheen began using a narrative therapy technique known as externalization with her then 3-year-old and noticed how helpful it was in teaching and talking about emotion." This inspired her to write a children's book that used the same strategy in introducing different emotions.

In the interview, Edmonton-based therapist Shaheen explains that anyone can use this strategy at home. While discussing emotions, she explains that instead of embodying the emotion by saying, "I am sad," externalization has you separate the emotion from yourself and say, "Sad is visiting."

Time and time, Shaheen found this to help kids take the shame out of the emotion and help them open up their communication.  You can find Shaheen's book, Indie and the Emotion Creatures, on Amazon to help the kids you are raising or working with find new language around emotions.
